1) What first got you into photography?

It's in my blood. My grandpa, who used to be a photographer in the navy, likes to take credit for establishing my talents, haha. But I first started taking photos when I was in the 5th or 6th grade with my dad's Nikon Coolpix 5700; I'd spend the entire day taking pictures of my dogs, moths in the grass, and broken chairs. In the 8th grade I was the photographer on the yearbook staff, and once Myspace kind of took off, I became very obsessed with "portraiture." Since then, I've continued to experiment with different styles and work with different subjects, all while growing and becoming better and better.

2) Who is your biggest mentor/inspiration?

Joey Lawrence (joeyl.com) is most definitely one of my biggest inspirations right now. This guy is my age and he's already travelled all around the world, photographing indigenous tribes of foreign countries, worked with some of the biggest names in today's music industry (The Jonas Brothers, 50 Cent, Panic At the Disco), and he even shot the music promos for the movie Twilight. His work makes me feel so unbelievably inadequate. But I strive to get to that point of doing what you love, and being very, very good at it.

3) Who is your favourite model?

I love alternative models these days. I'd have to say Miss Mosh is one of my favorites; her posing is so incredibly contorted. I'd really love to work with her some day.

4) What camera model and lens do you use mostly?

I'm currently working with a Canon EOS 30D equipped with the standard EF-S 17-85mm, an EF 50mm F1.4, and the EFS 10-22mm ultra wide angle. I probably use the wide angle way more than anyone enjoys.

5) What's your favourite type of photography (eg, portrait, landscape)?

Definitely portrait. I like being able to turn ugly people pretty, and pretty people ugly.

6) How long has Stuck With Pins been in business?

I've been uploading my photography to the web under the name "Stuck with Pins" since 2005.

7) Is it hard running your own business?

The photography aspect of Stuck with Pins is more of a side-business for me to the graphic design part. I enjoy doing what I do, but sometimes I work with people who have major attitudes and it makes me want to stop photographing for business.

8) What are your favourite tips for aspiring photographers?

Keep striving to be better, keep trying to learn from other photographers, study the ins and outs of photography and making a good photograph, and don't ever get discouraged that your work may not look as good as someone else's, but instead strive to get to the point of being better at what you do.

9) What's your favourite effect (eg, black and white, sepia)?

I like adding dramatic vignettes to my photos.

10) Do you want to be a professional photographer when you're older?

I don't really know what delineates a "professional" anymore nowadays - what, with so many people calling themselves freelancers. I just want to continue doing what I like to do, and if it evolves into more, then I'll run with it when that time comes.

11) Who has been your biggest help with Stuck With Pins?

God, for sure. He's blessed me with my talents and my success, so I'll continue to do it all for Him.

12) Other than photography, what do you do for fun?

I don't have fun; I'm a pretty boring person. :) I hang out with friends, take long walks on the beach, read poetry over a candle-lit dinner... the usual.

13) What kind of music do you like, and do you find music a good inspiration?

I listen to weird stuff like lounge cabaret, trance, and big band jazz. But my normal person playlist consists of Norma Jean, Kings of Leon, Every Time I Die, Radiohead, and Brand New. If I want to be inspired for a strange and twisted photoshoot, I'll read the Blood Brothers' lyrics.
